The Importance of Omitting

William Stunk Jr, the Cornell English Professor wrote Elements of Style in 1918. Today the book is required reading for journalism students across the country, but its not just journalists that can learn from Stunk. In Elements of Style Stunk wrote that “one should omit needles words.” Zen Habits: Simple Productivity took this one step further in a recent blog post by suggesting we omit needless things. 15 Productivity Pearls to Create a More Organized Life

by: Denise Caron-Quinn Founder & President of In Order To Succeed   1. Begin the organization process with areas that are most visible and/or problematic. Start small and be sure to allow sufficient time for each step in the process. (sort, purge, assign a home, containerize, then maintain and equalize regularly) 2. Create systems that fit your life and surroundings. 3. Keep your systems and procedures as simple as possible. 4. Sort everything by how it is used and keep things close to where you use them. 5. Automate as much as possible – become more familiar with technology to use it to help organize information and pay bills to…

Manage Your Actions and You'll Free Your Time

by: Denise Caron-Quinn, President & Founder of In Order To Succeed

n a recent Wall Street Journal article we’re told of the development of a new type of drug designed to battle biology. This pharmaceutical agent is growing in popularity for it assists sleep-deprived individuals to remain awake, less groggy and supposedly more productive. The desire for extended periods of rest is being overtaken by a zeal in our society to banish fatigue and maximize our capacity to get more done each day.

Failing In Order To Succeed

Do we need to fail in order to succeed?    A very provocative question.   Is it best to avoid failure?   Not necessarily. There are two ways to avoid failure  – Working so hard and doing such a good job that you succeed – Only taking on projects that are so far below your capabilities that failure is never a realistic possibility. If you really want to succeed you must take on things that have a high chance of failing.  If you only attempt things that you know you can do, then you aren’t challenging yourself .  Never having any failures, it is a pretty good indicator that you aren’t…

Product Review: Chalkboard Calendar

It may be the height of summer but pretty soon those lazy august days are going to turn into autumn. Now is the time to getting organized.  Between school, work, and managing a household, it is often hard to remember who needs to be where when, and when different things are due. That’s why every family needs a household calendar.  Maybe you already have one on your computer or your cell, but having one big family calendar that everyone can see and add to is an organizational lifesaver. We love this do it yourself calendar from Martha Stewart. There’s something so classic and modern about a chalkboard calendar and making it…

Product Review: Jott Assistant

Jott Assistant is one of In Order To Succeed’s founder and president, Denise Caron Quinn’s, favorite tools, although sometimes we wish it wasn’t so easy for her to send us a to do list. With Jott Assistant Denise simply speed dials the jott number on her phone and then she can record quick messages for herself, create and manage her and our to do lists, and create remainders all handsfree.  All these messages and tasks are then automatically texted, emailed, or voicemailed to her, or her employees, or her kids. Denise even uses jott to schedule meetings straight to her outlook and goolge calendars, update her twitter status, listen to…

Six Ways to Boost Productivity

1.  Stop Multitasking and give your family, your friends and your personal and professional issues i your full attentention 2.  Recharge yourself.  Give yourself some down time.  Schedule it to be sure that you make it happen. 3.  Keep one calendar.  Adopt a system that works for you and stick with it. Don’t look in more than one place to know where you’ll need to be. 4.  Be realisitic when scheduling the time it will take to get something done.  Then add an additional 15 minutes as a buffer as we know how often tasks require more time and predicted.  Expect and plan for delay. 5.  Put technology to work…
